2018 was the year that we saw learner experience take centre stage. Our clients and the e-learning market in general widened their focus to not only decide what training should be delivered and how it’s content is designed. They also turned their attention to what it means to be a user of their Learning Management System and the role it’ plays in making learning available on demand, on the job, intuitively presented and engaged in their progressive development.
Perhaps it’s the Netflix/Apple effect of high quality usability standards in our everyday lives that has brought about this higher expectation, but there is no doubt that it is welcome. Putting learners needs front and centre is so important to ensure they have a positive experience and will come back for more training.
So what do learners want from an LMS?
The user experience (UX) hierarchy of needs (see fig. 1), borrows from Maslow’s model, and clearly shows that user experience is more than usability. The most fundamental needs – Functionality and Reliability are at the bottom of the pyramid – this is the minimum that is required, but to truly engage employees requires ‘convenience’, ‘pleasure/fun’ and ‘meaning’. These are the needs above usability in the model and which LMSs need to support if they are to really help organizations transform the behavior of their employees through training.
view the video of our webinar UX meets Learner Experience meets LMS 2019 to see some learning experiences Enovation have built that fit into this hierarchy. The webinar will highlight key features of an LMS you should look out for to support ‘meaningful’ learning experiences and provide tips on how you can engage your learners using them. We shall show you some of our latest course page formats to suit compliance delivery, blending learning and other course types.
